Ghatak Was Here

Few places have suffered more from the wounds of colonialism than Bengal. The famine of 1943 and the Partition of 1947 rank among the worst catastrophes in history. Their impact still reveberates in India today, and around the world.

Bengali director Ritwik Ghatak (1925-1976) probed the agony and ecstasy of his divided land in eight extraordinary films which were little seen in his lifetime, but are now regarded among the greatest achievements in world cinema.

Celebrating Ghatak’s cententary in 2025/26, this film is directed by Sanghita Sen, drawing on her private archive of interviews with some his closest family and collaborators.

Developed with the support of the National Lottery via Screen Scotland.
